You will need: a clear plastic eye shield, paper Micropore tape, Solarshield (or similar) post surgery sunglasses, and some preservative-free artificial tears to recover successfully. A kit, containing everything except the artificial tears, may be purchased in our office for $10.00, or you may pick up the supplies from a medical supply store. Artificial tears may be purchased at your local drug store or in our office for convenience.
Optionally, we apply a medication called Mitomycin C during your procedure which has been shown to reduce recurrence of pterygiums. We can order this for you for $175 if paid 2 weeks prior to your procedure.

You must be awake. If you need some medication to relax, we can provide this You will not feel any significant pain. Medications will be applied so that you do not feel any pain. These medications can sting momentarily when applied.
You do not have to fast. Eat a comfortable breakfast. Avoid caffeinated beverages that can increase your anxiety.

If you are taking Aspirin, Coumadin, Plavix or other blood thinner, you will need to call your primary care physician to see if these can be discontinued for 7 days prior to surgery. If this cannot be done, please notify this office immediately.
Your eye may be irritated and have mild pain. Over the counter pain medications such as Tylenol should provide relief. If you have severe pain, you should call the office.
Resume all of your medications except your eye drops.
Start the following medications.
Prednisolone: 4X a day for *4 (FOUR)* wks,3X a day for 1 wk,2X a day for 1 wk,1x a day for 1 wk
Ofloxacin: 4x a day for 1 wk
Four times a day does not mean every 6 hours. You can space the drops to be more convenient. For example, one 4 time a day regiment would be 1 drop at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtime. Wait at least five minutes between drops.
You may resume most regular activities. You may start driving only when your vision is largely back to baseline which is usually 1 to 3 days after surgery. Avoid sweat and fumes to your eye for 1 week. Avoid stooping over and lifting heavy objects also for 1 week. You may bathe and wash your face cautiously. Avoid swimming for four weeks after the surgery.
